We sat down and spent some time with content creator brothers, Kody and Kyler of The Outbound Life. They specialize in adventure content and have spoken at multiple conferences including TEDx. Check out their video and read more about these interesting brothers.
Where do you live? Where are you from? Tell us what you love most about your community.
Kody and I live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I’m in Lake Zurich and he’s in Barrington to be specific. It helps living 10 minutes away from each other when you’re running a business. I think what we love most living just outside of the city is the luxury of everything being a bit less crammed, access to amazing nature locations, and the convenience of easily being able to take a train downtown.
What’s your favorite thing about your Boosted board? (Which one do you ride?) What did you use or ride before your Boosted board and how has your day changed?
It sounds cheesy to say, but most of our product decisions have a lot to do with supporting our ideal lifestyle. Everything we do is all about staying on the move, building our business, and keeping the momentum going. Boosted is the ultimate convenience machine (and is ridiculously fun to ride!!) We literally take our boards everywhere because they’re easy to store (even when taking to a coffee shop or business meeting), and they’re the best way to get around the city (RIP waiting in traffic, parking, or paying out the wazoo for Ubers everywhere). We use different Boosted vehicles for different scenarios. My go-to is the Plus, and Kody rides the Stealth, but he also rides the Rev on his daily 6-mile commute to work. We’ve also fallen in love with the Mini S’s because we can fly with them, and we’ve been using them a lot while traveling lately.
What was the most annoying thing about getting around town before you had your Boosted board?
All the logistics that come with cars. Especially downtown – parking, uber costs, traffic. Also, I feel way more motivated to go on mini adventures all the time now. Sometimes you’re not in the mood to drive somewhere or walk, but when you have a Boosted Board, I feel like it opens up your world a bit, encouraging you to get out there and experience new things in a convenient way. Plus, you naturally see a lot of new sights when you’re always looking for an excuse to take the Boosted out haha
What are your favorite places to visit on your board near where you live?
In our Suburbs, forest preserves, the actual Lake in Lake Zurich, and coffee shops (shoutout to Cook Street Coffee in downtown Barrington!!) have to be at the top. In Downtown Chicago, a few of our favorite places to explore are Wicker Park (hope you like sushi burritos and vinyl shops!) and The Lakefront Trail – 18.5 miles of glorious cruising, and one of the reasons we think Chicago is the most beautiful City on Earth!!
Describe your favorite ride and what you see along the way?
Let me just start by saying I’m all about Fall – my favorite season by far! This is definitely one of the perks I love about the Midwest, getting to experience all the seasons! I love a good bike path in a forest preserve in the Fall. It doesn’t get any better than that for me. But don’t take my word for it, check it out!
What type of camera did you use to capture this content?
We used a Canon 5d mark IV for all of the day time shooting – the autofocus is insane, and the photo quality is amazing. For the night shots, we used the Sony A7S ii – we did this because of its out of this world low light capabilities.
What’s your photo/video inspiration for this content?
Remember the old iPod commercials?? The ones that made you just want to dance? That was sorta the feel we were going for on this. We wanted to make it feel like one big dance party (on wheels) from start to finish.
What are you listening to now? Spotify Top 10?
Woah, 10 is a big number, careful – I’m a Spotify addict who listened to 66,000 minutes of music last year. I’ll throw some of my top bands on repeat right now! (Yeah my playlist pretty much always sounds like a Fall day in a coffee shop..)

What are reading now, website, favorite places to visit on the internet?
I just finished “A Curious Mind” by Brian Grazer. This is one of the most influential producers in Hollywood, and I really recommend this to anyone who wants to think outside the box and learn how curiosity can completely open up new possibilities in your life. Right now I’m reading “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle. Kody is reading Simon Sinek’s book, “The Infinite Game”, and I’m itching for him to finish it so I can get my hands on it! (Hurry up Kody!) I should probably say TED.com or something, but lately, my favorite distraction is watching deleted scenes from Borat on youtube…
Who are some of your favorite videographers and photographers?
Stillmotion – these guys are storytellers at heart and create seemingly living, breathing, and human stories that leave you inspired.
Chris Burkard – A hero and mentor to us. He is a master of his craft of travel photography, and his work stretches our brains..
Brandon Stanton – An example of master storytelling, and also a lesson in the power of simplicity. There’s a reason his “Humans of New York” is the massive sensation that it is today.
What are your daily routines/habits, how do they keep you motivated or on track?
Meditation, cold showers, working out, and journaling. These keep our minds sharp and our bodies agile. I really recommend to anyone looking for more clarity and balance in their life to give meditation a shot. The app Headspace is the easiest way to start – you can do it on the go with whatever time slot you have (3 minutes, 10, 20, it doesn’t matter). Kody works out in the mornings, and I typically work out in the night. Cold showers are amazing too. It boosts your immune system, helps circulation, lowers stress, and helps muscle recovery among a bunch of other benefits. Also after starting each morning with this discipline, you feel ready to take on just about anything!
Are you a procrastinator or a time cop?
Hmm deep down I probably know I’m the procrastinator who wants to be a time cop when he grows up. This is why I’m really lucky to run a business with Kody. He has amazing discipline and structured qualities that balance out my head in the clouds style.
This summer we launched the most honest look at our story that we’ve ever created. I think the challenge with social media is we all want to make it look like we live picture-perfect lives. So in other words, we all get stuck in a rat race of trying to look perfect, and we become depressed when our “behind the scenes” aren’t lining up with the “highlight reels” others are putting out.
The ANTI highlight reel is our attempt to face this topic. It’s a story about failure, the stuff we typically don’t broadcast. 6 years of our life in 6 minutes. I hope it encourages you if you’re feeling stuck in life, or wonder if there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
